Jenkins said he will conduct the department’s operations in a “business as normal” fashion. “I have a lot of experience with the office, and 1 can run it.” Although he can contact the sheriff in an emergency, Jenkins added, he does not intend to do so unless absolutely necessary.
Olinger was elected sheriff in 1983 after serving as a deputy sheriff for 15 years. He joined the Sheriffs Office as a dispatcher while a senior at Fauquier High School. After graduation he became a deputy and was later promoted to investigator.
He resigned from the department in March 1983, when he announced his candidacy for sheriff against incumbent Luther Cox. Olinger defeated Cox in the Democratic primary, then beat Republican Charles Cooper in the general election that November.
Olinger has faced other personal problems in the past, including a bout with cancer in 1985 and the bankruptcy of his part-time dairy farming business, run with his brother, John, in 1989.
Olinger is a native of the Bealeton area, where he still lives with his wife, Carolyn. They have one grown daughter.
Jenkins is also a Fauquier County native who was graduated from FHS in 1965. Following a stint in the Air Force, including one year in Vietnam, he returned to Fauquier and joined the Sheriffs Office as a dispatcher in 1969. He became a deputy sheriff later that year and was made a shift supervisor by Sheriff Luther Cox in 1973.
