identify the parts of the mammalian reproductive system and learn about changes occurring in puberty. “But most of the emphasis is on self esteem, decision making, child abuse and neglect and drug abuse,” Mr. Smith said. The topics are covered one class per week for 10 weeks during the social studies period, he said.
Mrs. Vickers and Mr. Smith both reported that the children are very interested in the topics covered and are emotionally and intellectually ready for the lessons.
“I was very impressed with the responsibility of the students,” Mr. Smith said. “They had a mature attitude and were eager to learn. They paid closer attention to these lessons than anything else I taught last year.”
The teachers said they encouraged students to write down any questions they had, and they answered their questions during the next lesson. “It relieves embarassment,” Mrs. Vickers said. “They will ask questions they wouldn’t ask out loud. I tell them if you didn’t hear your question, go home and ask your parents; I can’t answer it.”
“We were both nervous initially,” Mr. Smith said. “But with the level of parental support and the maturity and interest of the students, we see this as a positive.”
Many of the objectives are the same in fifth and sixth grades, and Margaret Lee said she had presented the material to sixth grade the girls this year that was shown to her fifth graders last year. Some of the students who opted out last year ' took part in the program this year, she said. She also noted that they asked fewer questions this year, and she believes it is because most of their questions were answered last year.
Mr. James Fountain teaches sixth grade boys. Like Mrs. Lee he had priase for a film strip series that is used as part of the curriculum.
“These film strips did most of our work for us,” Mr. Fountain said.
“If I had to do it on my own, I wouldn’t be as comfortable with it,” Mrs. Lee said. “I wish it was something we really didn’t have to deal with,” she said. “I wish the parents did it. I feel a little sad that we have to do it. In the past we didn’t have to
