The Family Life curriculum in Rappahannock schools is going {smoothly in its second year, teachers {and principals report. J Parents can choose to have their (children opt out of the program, but 'fewer than 2 percent have done so .this year, both principals report. • j This percentage is down from ‘last year, when about 2 percent .opted out, they report. I The Family Life Curriculum covers many topics such as drug prevention, developing good family and ;peer relationships, the influence of {advertising on purchases, and respecting differences between people {as well as sex education. < “Family Life Education has been {integrated into the curriculum, and {that has made it less controversial,” {elementary principal Bemie Chesjshir said. ' He said that many of the topics iare covered throughout the year as {they come up, but that for “sensitive issues” teachers wait to notify parents before they teach the material iso the parents can be prepared to {follow up at home. “It’s being very {well received by parents,” he said. * High school principal John Toth also reported no complaints from parents this year. “Everything is going fine,” he said.
