Since opening in November, the county animal shelter in Amissville has been operating at capacity, according to shelter director Tracey Clark.
“We’re just equipped for dogs now, but we plan in the near future to build a cat room,” said Mrs. Clark.
There are currently eight runs for dogs, and the average population at the shelter is about 20, said Mrs. Clark. Younger dogs are able to share the runs, she said.
Before the shelter was opened, the county had rented space at John Kline’s kennel, she said. As the space was rented, dogs were put to sleep after five days.
“Now that more people know where we’re at, there has been more success at finding their original homes or adopting out,” said Mrs. Clark.
