“It is difficult to keep up with this curriculum,” he said. “It takes additional planning and preparation. I think parts of it are burdensome. If I want to use a magazine article, I have to get it approved.”

Mr. Heddleston was a mamber of the citizens group that developed the Family Life curriculum. “Thirty people really hammered out a curriculum that is best suited to our community.

“I agree with the curriculum totally, but that doesn’t make it easy,” he said. “The most challenging assignment I ever had in the classroom is to speak with students about the more personal issues of fidelity and chastity, but I’ve had a lot of success in that too. Some kids have said they appreciate it.”

Mr. Heddleston said that sometimes the students want to argue. “Students sometimes play devil’s advocate, but they are getting more informatibn. Students need reminders from the other side, different from what they see in movies and on TV, but they should be getting that at home. Is it really the domain of the schools? I still wrestle with that question.”
