WARRENTON — Fauquier County Sheriff Ashby W. Olinger has taken a medical leave and hospitalized himself for treatment of alcoholism.
Maj. Warren L. Jenkins, the department’s chief deputy, made the announcement Monday morning, releasing a written statement from Olinger.
“This is to inform all the people of Fauquier County that, effective March 17, 1991,1 have admitted myself into a treatment center for medical reasons to treat my disease of alcoholism,” the statement began.
Olinger, 42, appointed Jenkins to “assume the duties and responsibilities of Sheriff” in his absence. Jenkins said he expects Olihger to be on leave for “about a month. ”
OlingeFs statement continued, “Mjyor Jenkins has served in the Sheriffs Office for 22 years and has been chief deputy for over seven years. The citizens of Fauquier County can have complete confidence in his leadership.”
Jenkins declined to identify the treatment center. “Saying where he is won’t do anybody any good,” he said.
He said that Olinger has not indicated that he has changed his plans to seek a third term as sheriff in November. “That, obviously, is the decision of the sheriff. He hasn’t told me anything different,” he said.
