It appeared that Dawn Dugan couldn’t wait to untack.
“When she crossed the finish, her saddle was two feet behind the normal position. She had about ridden the saddle off of him,” said Oliver Brown, owner of Rappahannock’s old-fashioned winner Oliver’s Tiger.
Dugan rode Brown’s horse to victory March 17, when the Rappahannock Hunt staged its old-fashioned race at 10 a.m. at Thornton Hill farm.
The field was a small but elite group of five runners: Dawn Dugan on Oliver’s Tiger, Pete Aylor on Marlboro Prince, Robin Bateman on Top Rock (Harvester), Bud Stewart on Shelby and Bill Prime on Shell Out.
Oliver’s Tiger ran the four-mile course in 10:52. Marlboro Prince finished 36 seconds later, taking the heavyweight trophy and the opposite sex one. Top Rock was another minute behind Marlboro Prince,
