Mr. Antony hoped that at the eftd of the experiment he would have developed a foolproof, systematic approach to growing azaleas. The couple was to learn that horticulture involves a little science, considerable experience, and an awful lot of backbreaking labor.
In 1979, they had a water well drilled and a small pond constructed on their property. In 1980 they felt confident enough to build a bam that would be the base of their operations. Mr. and Mrs. Antony, Mrs. Antony’s dad Raymond Spencer (a former carpenter), and several friends and family members built a 20-by-36, two-story gambril-roof bam.
As soon as the bam was under roof, Mr. Antony installed a pump in the well and turned it on; miracuously, water flowed. Not a lot, but enough to keep the nursery going for several years until Mr. Antony installed a water system from the pond and a second well was drilled.
In 1981 they built their first 50by-100 growing zone: a flat area covered with black polyethylene, topped with gravel and surrounded by an overhead irrigation system. Mr. Antony bought the hoops and constructed a 100-foot polyhouse
