Students in Susan Parker’s kindergarten class at Rappahannock County Elementary School are looking forward to a special day in April. They are finally going to meet the pen pal with whom the whole class has been corresponding for four months.
They have been writing letters to Lt. Rich Fawcett of the U.S. Navy, stationed in the Persian Gulf. Lt. Fawcett, a Sea Hawk helicopter pilot, is assigned to the USS Nicholas, which is known as the “Nasty Nick.”
The main purpose of the USS Nicholas is to provide anti-air protection to various other U.S. Navy vessels as well as to patrol waters in the Persian Gulf.
Lt. Fawcett, an acquaintance of Ms. Parker, looked forward to receiving their letters and sent letters as well as pictures of the Sea Hawk helicopter and the USS Nicholas back to the class. Anything he sent was a treasure in itself, according to the enthusiastic response of the children.
Writing these letters proved to be a special part of the whole-language curriculum now in place at the elementary school. Students learn when the writing has a purpose in lieu of word lists and labels that have
