believe the decision to take him off the powerful committee was in any way retaliation for that vote, though not many people believe that contention either.
The prevailing theory among political observers seems to be that Robb was removed both because of his fiscal conservatism and his belief that the war against Iraq was right and proper. Certainly, the president’s skillful handling of the war with a minimum loss of life raised his standing greatly and may come back to haunt Democrats in Congress who voted against it.
Perhaps Robb will learn a valuable lesson from the latest slap in the face directed against him by members of his own party. For years he has been contending that he wants to export the conservative ways of Virginia Democrats to the national party and halt its steady drift to the left.
He was a founder of a Democratic Leadership Conference, composed of moderates and conservatives who said their goal was to get the party back to the middle ground.
