So, let’s try again. The issue is the love affair our country has with violence and our passivity in the face of violence; the ever-escalating violence done by the state, done by our institutions, and done by us against one another. It is the issue of the violence in each of us. This is a terribly complex issue and one letter to the editor can hardly solve it. But the purpose is to raise the issue, to raise some questions, to raise the level of thought, to consider possible alternatives.
When I wrote my letter, we were in the midst of a most lethal war. The coalition had unleashed incomprehensible devastation upon Iraq, compounding the Iraqi devastation of Kuwait. And after we had used and shown on TV all our our latest weapons: “Patriot,” “Peacemaker,” “smart-bombs,” and I have forgotten the sanitized name of the gasoline bomb that asphyixiated people. . . .you remember, the terrible anti-personnel bomb that only the dastardly Iraqis could use, until it turned out sometime later that we not only had the same bomb, but were quite willing to use it.
