When Ms. Parker suggested they write another letter to Lt. Fawcett, it was met with an eager response. She asked what they wanted to say as she wrote it on a large ruled sheet of paper for all to see.
From writing other letters, the students already knew to start with “Dear Lt. Fawcett.” As a student suggested a line, Ms. Parker wrote it word for word while the students watched and learned.
When the word “helicopter” was used, she indicated she wasn’t sure of the spelling and immediately these 5-year-olds knew to reach for the dictionary. Prior to the closing, Ms. Parker read the letter back to the students and many of these knowledgeable young people joined right along in the reading.
When the letter was finished, each child proudly came forward to sign their own name. The following is a copy of one of the letters sent to Lt. Fawcett:
Dear Lt. Fawcett,
We are happy you sent us a note. We like your helicopter. We like your boat.
We play with animals in house. We like playing in centers.
We hope there will not be a war.
