Mr. Fitzsimmons (“Ill-conceived argument,” March 14) and Mrs. Francine Nadler (“Appropriate Symbolism,” March 7) both took exception to my letter of March 1 that questioned the Administration and its policy in the Gulf.
Mrs. Nadler, after expressing a few of her feelings, takes exception to my choice of words. At the end of her letter she does rise to express her point of view and thereby starts the process where opposing viewpoints are shared, dialogue begins and perhaps some differing ideas are better understood.
Mr. Fitzsimmons, however, chose a different route — humiliation. His approach does violence to the free exchange of ideas, to the democratic process, and most basically to the respect for another human being. It is an increasingly familiar tactic: if you don’t agree with them, attack their person, find a shibboleth and beat them bloody with it, all the while ignoring the issues raised. But why should I expect Mr. Fitzsimmons to act differently
