judgement'

Last week’s fine letter from Phil Drevas has prompted me to voice my complaints regarding Lou Hatter’s poor editorial judgement.
Last year my friend Sam Vanneman was voted the Multiple Sclerosis Society Man of the Year for all of Virginia. He and his family went to Richmond and received the award from Gov. Douglas Wilder. I was, and am, very proud of Sam, so I took this information directly to Lou Hatter.
Although he now lives in neighboring Culpeper, Sam had lived and worked in Rappahannock for many years, and has many friends in the county. Certainly, his award was of local interest.
Lou agreed, and said he would interview Sam that afternoon.
When I told friends about my visit with Lou, their response was “The only way Sam will get in the paper is if he’s in a car wreck.” I reminded my friends that the editor said he was going to do the story that afternoon. Well, there never was a word about Sam or his award in the Rappahannock News that week or any week.
What did make the news that week was the story about an out-ofcounty wreck in which an out-ofcounty woman and two out-ofcounty children were killed, and, you guessed it, several twisted metal photos. I grieve for the woman and children, but could have been spared the photos. I would rather Lou had gone to interview Sam instead of ambulance chasing for tabloid photos.
Put me on the list of those who want more good news of local interest and fewer photos of twisted metal.
