The Sills’ moved to Rappahannock from D.C., because Dr. Sills can operate out of his home using just a phone, a computer and a fax machine. His various companies and organizations are so diverse that he boasts of offices in every state and even in Geneva, Switzerland.
The distribution of “The Making of America,” he said, was the brainchild of an Iowa farmer named Zelden Nelson. Mr. Nelson had helped finance the publishing of the book, and was left with thousands of copies in his bam.
As Dr. Sills puts it, “I’m not someone who just gets involved in a project. I get involved.” He started contacted foreign embassies to see if they were interested. The response was staggering.
The Soviet government wants a copy of the book in all of the country’s schools and libraries. There are 160,000 schools and 360,000 libraries in Russia.
The book is going through its third printing of 30,000, and the biggest problem the coalition is running into is finding corporate sponsors to ship the books overseas.
“What I’m saying to the American people is, here are the requests from around the world. It is happening, let’s build it even further,” he said.
Another of Dr. Sills’ memberships is on the national Day of Prayer Committee, a White House sponsored observance that will be held May 2 this year.
His role is to coordinate church participation nationally. The theme this year is “America, It’s Time to Pray.”
A Baptist minister, Dr. Sills’ last church was in California in 1984. He had criminal charges filed against him back in 1969 in Los Angeles for a “zoning violation:” holding Bible study in his home, he said, an example of how government and religions sometimes don’t mix well.
He has witnessed Jesus Christ to thousands of Hare Krishnas in West Virginia after befriending them through his campaign for religious freedom, and still gets calls from around the country as a result.
Dr. Sills at age 64 isn’t having a very peaceful retirement.
