town. This year the trophy is shaped like a mug with the hare and tortoise motif on the front. Bands of red, yellow and blue circle the top of the mug, representing the place the winner holds in the race.
Larger mugs of the same design are for Eva Smith Memorial winners.
The monetary reward for the record breaking runner has grown to $300. If both male and female records are broken, winners will split the reward, evenly.
Records for the race were set in 1983 by Kim Beylea of Winchester with a time of 36:46 and for the men in 1986 by Steve Pinard with a time of 31:26.
This year the race is sponsored by several groups or organizations. The Inn at Little Washington is the nugor sponsor and will donate Tshirts for the first 300 runners to cross the finish line. Liberty Savings Bank of Warrenton provides the financial reward for record breakers and Rappahannock National Bank has provided funds to support the making of the trophies. Ice cold beverages for all participants are provided by Pepsi Cola of Warrenton.
Proceeds for the event benefit the Rappahannock Recreational Authority, supporting the local park, maintenance of grounds, upkeep of equipment and the purchasing of new items.
Last year proceeds from the annual race funded the resurfacing of the tennis courts and a tennis clinic for those interested. The park is located in Washington and is free and open to the public. Fees for pavillion rental are charged.
