School Board Chairman Beverly Massie said the board had given primary consideration to the needs of the children. “A lot of things were cut out,” she said. “We can’t burden the whole county with all the things we feel are necessary for education.”
She said personnel had been shifted so “we have portions of people in various educational programs. We have brought a very conservative budget. It is not only tight; it is gasping in areas.”
Mrs. Massie said that in past years she had assured the Board of Supervisors that if the budget were approved, the School Board would not come back later in the year asking for more money. “I wish I could again give that assurance, but this year I can’t,” she said. r
