To the Editor:
I would like to pay tribute to a man who dedicated much of his life to helping others and his community . . . Elmer Jenkins. It was approximately 20 years ago that I first went to the old Jenkins Garage before the dual lane highway was constructed through Amissville. When I first met Elmer, he greeted me with his familiar, “can I help you,” and he did! He did not know me from Adam, but nevertheless he made me feel like he had known me for years.
As time went on, and I got to know Elmer and his family, I found out what a fine human being he was. His quote, “can I help you,” was part of his daily life. Helping everyone anywhere he could, he never questioned you as to “are you going to pay for this” or “what am I getting in return.” Anytime Elmer’s name was mentioned in any conversation around the county it was with great fondness for him.
On the day that Elmer was laid to rest on the beautiful knoll on his farm, everyone spoke about the enormous loss to this community. It is truly a loss for us all, but I would like to think that Elmer’s contributions and selflessness have made this a better community in which to live. Thank you, Elmer. We’ll miss you. May we all live up to your role model!
