Baseball splits
two contests
The Rappahannock High boys baseball team lost a close game to Central last week then rebounded to beat Manassas Park 7-2 for their third win of the season.
Against Central the Panthers were leading 7-6 going into the top of the seventh behind the pitching of freshman Hunter Foster. Four defensive errors later and Central had won, 10-7.
One highlight: junior catcher Kevin Daymude clocked a two-RBI home run, continuing his team-leading hitting pace.
On Friday the other freshman pitcher, J.C. Welch, went the distance in collecting the win for the Panthers. Rappahannock jumped out to a five-run lead in the first inning and never looked back.
Welch had seven strikeouts and threw only 99 pitches the whole game.
“He threw strikes and he threw a lot of ground balls,” said Coach Mike Tupper. Some outstanding defensive play saved the win, said Coach Tupper.
They play at Central Wednesday and home against George Mason at 5 p.m. Friday.
Track squad
has off meet
The Rappahannock High track team finished third in tri-meet against George Mason and Central at Central last Wednesday.
Only freshman runner Sherri Thomas could muster a first-place finish, winning the mile with a time of 6:34.
Scoring for the Panther boys were Chris Stringfellow, third in the shot; Jeremy Tole, third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles; Matt Eidson, second in the mile and third in the two-mile; and Randy Earley, who was fourth in the 800 meters.
For the girls, eighth-grader Jessica Arnold was third in the mile, Ane Zorrecheta was fourth in the 300 hurdles and Amber Earley was third in the 400.
