Boston Store has two 1,000-gallon three-year old number three tanks. “These are supposed to be good for 20 years,” Mrs. Alexander said, adding she did not know if a soil test was completed when the tanks were replaced three years ago.
Just 18 months ago, Mrs. Alexander and her daughter and son-inlaw took over the business in the store.
“We love this business,” she said of her store, filled with everything from videos and craft goods to fresh deli items and dog food. Gasoline was an extra that encouraged customers.
“We have not even pumped gasoline since the first of the year,” she said, adding the internment of gasoline at Boston Store had nothing to do with the “trace found by the highway department.”
Anderson Oil Company Inc. of Fredericksburg delivered gasoline to the tanks when Alexander took over as shopkeeper 18 months ago. Due to less demand and rising cost, the company stopped servicing Culpeper area, including Boston Store. For sometime after Anderson ceased services, Alexander’s tanks were serviced by Southern States.
“They wanted be to purchase the tanks and the pumps,” Mrs. Alexander said, outlining reasons the company terminated delivery to her Boston Store.
