Fire chief contestants needed
The Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department will hold its carnival July 24-27 and girls from Rappahannock, Warren and surrounding counties are eligible. Categories include Little Miss ages 4-9, Junior Miss 10-14 and Honorary Fire Chief 15-21. A meeting has been schedule for 7 p.m. on May 2 at the fire hall and additional information will be available at that time or may be obtained by calling 635-4673 after 5:30 p.m.
Lions benefit auction
The Rappahannock Lions Club is again planning for their annual benefit auction to be held at the Washington fire hall at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 11. Proceeds from this auction are used to support local needs of the community such as sight and hearing screening, youth athletics, senior citizens, scholarships, drug awareness and other projects. The club is accepting donations of new, renewed or serviceable items that you no longer have need for. Cash contributions are also gratefully accepted. Food and clothing however are not acceptable. Memorial Day festival planned
The Sperryville Business Council will host their annual Memorial Day festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 26-28. Many activities are planned for the three day weekend. Riding lessons available
Ash Tree Stables is offering beginner through advanced riding lessons for children and adults. Jumping lessons are held with Ian Slitch and flat work will be taught by Thom Hardy. For more information call 675-3228.
Spring concert
The Culpeper-Piedmont Choral Society announces its spring concert, “Mostly Broadway,” is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, May 4 at the Culpeper County High School.
Music director Lois Shanks has selected for this pops concert beloved songs and toe-tappers of Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Jule Styne, Rodgers & Hammerstein and a “Fiddler on the Roof’ medley.
The concert is free and open to the public. However, because of the high budget cost of this performance, a suggested donation of $2 per person will be gratefully accepted at the door.

Weight-control camp
The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor a youth weight-control camp June 12-16 at the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center.
