Fair weather is expected for Saturday’s 66th running of the Virginia Gold Cup and a scheduled -natchup of the nation’s top three timber horses, including Fat Chance Farm’s Tom Bob attempting a historic backto-back win from the Maryland Hunt Cup last weekend with rider Sanna Neilson.
Race officials said tickets will be available at area ticket outlets through Saturday morning but that no tickets will be sold at the gates on race day, May 4. Up to 50,000 race fans are expected.
The featured four-mile Gold Cup timber classic, sponsored by BMW, is expected to provide one of the most riveting races in its long history.
Heading the field of 12 horses for a purse of $35,000 will be three of this year’s top winners over the big post-and-rail fences: the undefeated Dr. Blase, who has won four races out of four starts this year under jockey Colvin “Greg” Ryan; 1990 Timber Horse of the Year Joe’s O.K., who won the International Gold Cup and the Maryland and Pennsylvania Hunt Cups, and Tom Bob, who only last Saturday won the
