The last horse to win the Hunt Cup and Gold Cup back to back on successive weekends was the great Billy Barton in 1926. No Hunt Cup winner has even attempted the feat since 1942 when Blockade, a son of Man O’ War, was killed at the 17th fence in the Gold Cup.
The Virgnia Gold Cup heads a seven-race card of timber and brush races for a total of $120,000 in purses at the Great Meadow course near The Plains. • Gates will open at 10 a.m. for pre-race events. A special salute to the Desert Storm Troops highlights the festivities at 1 p.m., which also includes the U.S. Parks Police Drill team at 11:15 a.m. and pony races for junior riders at noon.
