With an opeh bid for the coveted Eva Smith Memorial trophys — beautifully designed ginger jars crafted by Merrill Strange of Viewtown — 18-year-old Matt Eidson took home his first.
A 12-year veteran to the race, Eidson said he was surprised that he earned the trophy.
“I just ran like I always do,” he said, adding he followed fellow Rappahannock runner John Borgens most of the race.
“I just sprinted past him at the end,” the youth said. Eidson finished the race with a time of 39:21.
Merrill Strange was awarded one of her own trophies, taking the Eva Smith Memorial for women.
“I have done this every year,” the 42-year old runner said.
“And, I ran the whole way,” she said with pride, finishing with a time
