A Virginia Historic marker alongside U.S. 522, just north of Flint Hill, reads:
“Albert Gallatin Willis - a ministerial student, aged 20 of Meshy’s command, he was hanged near by pm Oct. 14, 1864, by U.S. 2nd Calvary (W.Va.) in reprisal for alledged murder of U.S. soldier by Mosby’s men. Of two captured, one was to be hanged. Willis was offered chaplain’s exemption but refused to doom his companion, a married man ‘with five children!’ Professing his Christian readiness to die, he prayed for his executioners.”
Chaplain Willis’s body is buried in the comer of the small cemetery back of the Flint Hill Baptist Church (erected 1854, closed 1968) on U.S. 522.
A small headstone marks the grave and a lovely, but faded, picket fence, built by the Rappahannock County Scout troop about 20 years ago, is still standing.
