While jailer Scott Jenkins went inside briefly, according to the sheriff, Walters scaled the fence and kept on going. Sheriff Woodward said Walters does not have a permanent home, having spent much of the last few years behind bars.
The sheriff called Walters a laborer and a drifter. •» Sheriff Woodward said, “The last time it looked like they got some help,” and this time it appeared Walters acted alone.
A few weeks after the last escape Wynkoop turned himself in and Walters was captured in Woodville.
Sunday afternoon Walters had been playing basketball in the recreation yard with fellow inmates Larry King, Gary Phelps and Larry Forbus. Deputy Jenkins went inside after watching the prisoners play ball for about an hour.
When last seen Walters was wearing camouflage pants, a blue Tshirt and black tennis shoes. He is just under 6 feet tall and weighs 170 pounds, said the sheriff.
Walters was sentenced in Rappahannock Circuit Court last week to a total of nine years for two counts of breaking and entering, one count of grand larceny and one count of petty larceny.
Woodworks
opens new shop
As of Jan. 1 Brandon Woodworks moved its cabinetmaking and furniture restoration shop to 75 S. Third St. in Old Town Warrenton. The woodworking shop is now in what used to be the old grainery next to the train depot (now a restaurant called The Depot).
