Spring musical

doing show tunes

Students in the pre-kindergarten through seventh grade at the Wakefield School in Huntly presented their annual Spring Musical on May 10.
The show was directed by Bonnie Williams of Flint Hill, who is the chair of Wakefield’s music department.
The musical consisted of 30 show tunes from Broadway musicals past and present.
There was something for everyone, from the spiritually uplifting “Climb Every Mountain” from “The Sound of Music” to an enthusiastic rendition of “There is Nothin Like a Dame” by the boys at the same time the girls sang “I Enjoy Being a Girl.”
The youngest classes presented three songs from “The Sound of Music.
The crowd loved the little ones’ rendition of “So Long, Farewell,” which featured 4-year-old Mary Yatafc of Flint Hill as the last child to say good-night at her fa« tiler's dance.
The students were obviously pleased with their performance and were ready to join in the applause several times before remembering they weren’t supposed tQ clap for their own act. At this point, several tucked their hands under their arms as a reminder!
The undisputed star of the evening was Chris Holliman of Warrenton who, along with classmates Suzanne Carrier of Viewtown and Kirsten Burton of Warrenton, choreographed the song “One” from “A Chorus Line.”
Holliman’s movements were perfectly adapted to the music and he performed with the assurance and pahache usually reserved for veteran dancers.
Students choreographed several other numbers for the show. The fifth-grade boys provided a rollicking opener to the music “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and another group of students danced to “To, gether Wherever We Go. ”
Student shows are usually something only a parent can love, but this one was different. The auditorium 6t the school was filled with clapping to the beat, tapping! feet, and enthusiastic spectators for this polished performance. ’ . I
