In cabbage and broccoli, low boron levels cause internal browning and hollow stems. Low potassium results in loose, poorly developed heads.
In snapbeans, lima beans and southern peas, low potassium causes poor seed development. Leafy greens yellow when nitrogen is low, develop leaf scorch when potassium is low and have chlorotic leaves with low manganese levels.
Low calcium levels in tomatoes and peppers increase blossom-end rot. Too much nitrogen causes soft fruit and a green gel, as well as blossom-end rot.
Root crops with too little potassium and calcium produce misshapen fruit or fruit with pits on the surface. Low boron produces turnips with internal browning and splitting.
Cantaloupes, cucumbers and watermelons with constricted blossom ends didn’t get enough nitrogen. Those with constricted necks grew in soil with low potassium.
Low calcium increases blossomend rot in these crops.
On the other hand, too much nitrogen can cause double bulbing of onions. It also can harm the texture of greens.
At proper levels, nitrogen provides the dark-green of greens and lets tomato vines grow enough to shade fruit from direct sun. Shielded fruit is redder.
