There is another generation of Williamses managing Chester Gap Grocery.
Nelson “Buck” and Marilyn Williams took hold of the management reins Oct. 1.
They represent the fourth generation of the Williams family to manage the tiny store in Chester Gap, serving not only as a consumer market for foodstuffs but as a bus stop for the local school bus and a resource for gasoline.
Last October, Bradley and LaMeryl Williams retired from the store and it fell to their cousin Buck.
Today, the new Williams behind the counter is learning delivery routes and new faces in the community.
Buck Williams, born and raised in Rapphannock County, retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance in September 1990. The next day he became proprietor of the store.
“A year or so ago, my cousin said he was ready to retire,” Mr. Williams said. “It was just in conversation. I said I would like to take over when he did retire. The more I got to thinking about it the more I liked the idea and so here I am.”
Mr. Williams said he discussed the ideas with his wife, Marilyn, before making the agreement firm.
“I said, ‘a grocery store?’ ” Mrs. Williams said, with laughter, adding once she walked into the store she had “no second thoughts.”
“I look forward to running a store,” Mr. Williams said with a smile.
“I never meet a strange face,” he said, adding, “I eryoy working with the public and a store seemed the right place to go.”
