Approximately one million people have Type I - the most severe form of diabetes - which occurs most often in children and young adults. In order to stay alive, people with Type I must take daily Insulin injections. Although it controls the disease, Insulin does not cure diabetes.

The majority of people with diabetes have non-Insulin-dependent diabetes, which usually occurs in overweight adults over age 40. This is the type of diabetes I discussed with the senior citizens. A history of diabetes in one’s family greatly increases one’s risk of developing the disease. Proper diet and exercise are essential to controlling Type II diabetes although oral medication or Insulin may also be needed.
