Susan Estes, a veteran of the high school stage, has had to learn the manual alphabet for the play. She is well on her way to having her lines memorized and says, “Our biggest problem is the stage.”
Linda Jenkins will play Helen’s over-protective mother. Zack Allen is her bewildered father, impatient with disruptions in his household. Kenny Giles will play Helen’s sometimes jealous older half brother.
Jason Fox will play the doctor who treats the illness which causes Helen’s blindness and deafness. Alice Reeve is cast as Dr. Anagnos, the head of the school for blind children Annie attended.
Melanie Moffett will play Helen’s Aunt Ev, and Heather Rossiter and Becky Allen will play servants in the Keller household.
For director Lori Pfalzgraf, high school English and drama teacher, this is also a first production.
The play has its comic moments, such as when Helen locks Annie in her new room, but it is primarily a drama. “Language is to the mind what light is to the eyes,” Annie tells Mrs. Keller.
“The Miracle Worker” will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25. Tickets are $3 for students and those under 12 and $4 for others.
