The parasite distribution program has been directed primarily toward peripheral infestation and areas threatened by the gypsy moth.
The parasite, Cotesia melanoscelus, must be timed closely with the occurence of the stage parasitized. The adult Cm emerge from their cocoons in the spring and parasitize 1st and 2nd instar gypsy moth larve. Their progency develop into adults that attach 2nd and 3rd instar gypsy moth larve in June.
These parasites are placed in a few areas in Rappahannock County with the hope that they will become permanently established here.
