Especially noteworthy is the announcement by Ethyl Corp. to establish a new headquarters and research and development facility in Richmond. As a result, $70 million wjM be invested and 200 new jobs wifi be created.

An additional benefit of this project is that some of the vacant commercial office space in the Richmond area will be utilized.

Another 875 jobs are being created in this region through the establishment of new specialty insurance, technical services and food distribution centers; and the expansion of communication equipment and food production facilities.

Hampton Roads Region

Household Interantional Inc. is establishing a new credit card operation in Chesapeake and will provide 1,400 new jobs to this region. Another 58 jobs in Hampton Roads are being added through the expansion of a metal recycling facility and the creation of a building products manufacturing operation.

Shenandoah Valley Region

The Orkand Corp. will provide 500 jobs through the creation of a data entry facility, to create bar codes on mail for the U.S. Postal System. Additionally, 70 new jobs will be created through manufacturing plant expansions totaling more than $3.8 million in investments to this area.

Southwest Virginia Region

Hoechst Celanese Fibers Co. will invest $37.5 million to expand its current facility in Giles County. .2

Secretary Magennis reported that “corporate inquiries for community and business site studies have increased 30 percent over 1991 second quarter figures.” Additionally, she noted, “visits to Virginia by prospective clients have increased over 10 percent during the first half of 1992 in comparison to the same period for 1991. These indicators attest to Virginia’s attractiveness as a business location and our positive pro-business climate.”
