The Democrats at their national convention last month declared it the year of the woman. From the looks of it in Rappahannock County, it's a prophecy that appears to be materializing rapidly as a number of young women in the area distinquish themselves through their 4-H accomplishments and their agility on the baseball field.
At the farm show this year, the top prizes were taken by two Rappahannock teenage girls, Mary Beth Williams and Katie Updike. In a whole other arena, girl’s softball, five county girls made their mark this spring by being chosen for the Senior League Culpeper All-Stars , after an excellent season of playing on their home team, the Sperryville Exons. The Exons, which is actually part of the Culpeper league, came in second place this year.
Coached by Carl Payne of Sperryville, whose daughter, Amy, 14, plays on the team and Ann Jenkins of Culpeper, the All-Stars consisted of 14 players, five of whom were chosen from Rappahannock County.
