Dr. Gangel reported that the census done this summer showed 1,600 children between one and 19 years old. This represents a 4.6 percent increase from the census done in 1989. The percentage who are residents in the town of Washington dropped, however, from 3 percent of the total to 1.76 percent of the total.
Dr. Gangel said each child counted in the census represents about $1,000 that will come to the school system from state sales taxes over the next three years.
Joyce Brown reported that the school Bystem will again receive a grant from the federal government to serve ‘‘at-risk’’ students. Starting in October the schools will receive $136,400 for the first year of a twoyear grant. The schools received funds for this program last year also.
Mrs. Brown reported that most of the funds will be used to pay salaries, part of the salaries of guidance counsellors, the salary of a drop-out prevention coordinator, an in-school suspension and alcohol and drug education teacherr, a school social worker and an administrative aide, who will work at both schools. This last is a new position.
