ping out, students with poor attendance and other categories of children who usually do not do well in school.
She said the program has three goals, to reduce drug use by 20 percent, to reduce referrals to juvenile court by 20 percent each year, and to increase involvement of parents and community agencies.
Hampton District representative Bryant Lee asked if the school system will have to return the money if the goals aren’t met.
Dr. Gangel said they will not have to return the money, and Mrs. Brown said they would have to explain why they had failed. She said, for example, there were more referrals to juvenile court last year because the school system was being more active in trying to prevent truancy.
“The focus is prevention,” she said. “The first year we made a lot of dents in the problems. I feel we are supported by the schools and School Board.”
Dr. Gangel said he had expected the equipment for Channel One to be put in the high school over the summer. Since nothing has happened so far, he said, it would not be possible to have the program in place at the beginning of school. He said he did not want to start school and then change the schedule. The board voted to put off participating in Channel One until next year.
The board adopted a fee schedule for next year. Most of the fees are the same. The cost of a full lunch for high school students will be increased from $1.10 to $1.25. The cost of some high school gym uniform pieces and some books the students keep was increased. The cost of a parking sticker will increase from $16 to $18.
