to do some graphics and we were looking for some work,” Mr. Kvames said of their beginning.
Mr. Kvames, an ex-garbage collector, obtained his first computer to keep garbage business records. His garbage business failed but his computer interest grew and with it his computer warehouse. Today he owns four computers, basically using the two Apple Macintosh IIs.
He’s had no regrets giving up his garbage business and chancing the computer industry.
“I did a newsletter with Daphne Hutchinson and I was hooked,” he said with laughter, adding that since his days as a youth watching “Star Trek” his interest in computers has been unquenchable.
“There is so much you can do with Apple Macintosh II’s desk top publishing,” he said eagerly, adding that after several years of selfguided study and hours upon hours of dedicated work he is now able to provide consultation and teach others computer usage.
His business with Ms. Carnahan comes before his educational endeavors. “There are print shops everywhere,” she said adding that the impersonal atmosphere often makes the consumer feel less creative and more disatisfied.
“We’re small and we care more, giving the customer a real choice in what they want,” she said, referring to the customers ability to sit at the computer and discuss layout or design with either Mr. Kvames or herself.
Nestled deep in Gid Brown Hollow, the office does not benefit from business found on a busy downtown throughfare. Early on, the remoteness did not seem to handicap the new business, however, today, Mr. Kvames said the recession has presented a large obstacle for the small company, causing the owners to look farther and farther away for business.
