Mr. Rives said the park was notified of the location of the crash at 4:30 p.m. Monday after a Virginia State Police helicopter, which was assisting in the search for the overdue aircraft, located the plane. A search party located the wreckage on the ground by 6p.m., Rives said, but due to the impending nightfall and the remote location, it was decided not to remove the bodies until Tuesday morning.
Reportedly, Haslam was a commercial pilot with US Air based in Pittsburgh. Mr. Rives said there was a substantial fire after the crash which badly burned both victims, and a postive identification will be made by the state forensics laboratory in Fairfax County.
On Tuesday, investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were at the crash site. A determination of the cause of the crash will be issued following their investigation. Mr. Rives estimated that final determination could take up to six months.
