Change is
not always
better
To the Editor:
In the “News” of Thursday, Aug. 6, 1992 in Easy road predicted for name changes by Sharon Kilpatrick, I am upset that someone had suggested that Route 614 be named (or renamed) Little Devil Stairs Road. Change is not always better, and often those wanting to make the changes don’t know what they’re doing. Therefore I offer the following (which can be verified):
James Hector Smedley, for whom it is apparent Smedley Hollow was named for, lived on part of the Snead Farm. He died and is buried on the old Compton place, now Kvames property. The cemetery is on the little hill beside the bam, which is unrecognizable now, since a former owner, T. Baldwin, had this spot cleared years ago, there were no readable tombstones, only field stones to mark the graves.
Smedley Post Office, formerly Lyle (after Darius Lyle Miller Sr.) was named for this same family. The building, the old store and post office is still standing near Promise Land Baptist Church.
