Mr. Rives said rangers on patrol on Skyline Drive Saturday morning reported heavy fog, particularly at higher elevations. However, Rives said, there was no determination that the fog caused the crash. “What caused it will have to wait on the crash investigators’ report,” he said.

• A storm-related fire gutted a home under construction in Washington Tuesday afternoon. Washington VFD fire chief Roger Roach said a neighbor reported that the house was struck by lightning, and almost immediately was engulfed in flames. Firefighters from Washington, Flint Hill and Sperryville extinguished the fire, which destroyed the house.
Chief Roach estimated damage to the house, which is owned by Rollie Pointer, of Washington, D.C., at $20,000. There was no one living in the house, he added.
