The Board of Supervisors got its first look at a the proposed $8.6 million county budget for the coming year this week. The budget is up nearly $767,000, or 9.8 percent over the current budget.
County Administrator John McCarthy prepared the first draft for the supervisors to look over prior to their public hearing on the school budget next Monday evening.
Mr. McCarthy- suggested a tax rate of 62 cents per $100 of assessed value on real estate to fund the budget. That represents a 24 percent increase over the current rate of 50 cents.
Even with the 62-cent rate, the proposed budget shows $557,000 more in spending than in revenue. The deficit would be made up by drawing on the general fund surplus.
About nine cents of the 12-cent increase would be needed to fund the increase in the school budget, Mr. McCarthy said.
About $275,000 would be for closing the cell currently being used at the landfill. Since this is a non-recurring cost, it can be justified as coming from surplus. Mr. McCarthy noted in a cover letter. The surplus is larger than was anticipated when the current budget was adopted, partially because of unanticipated revenues from taking “fluff’ at the landfill.
Included in the budget are 3 percent raises for county employees. Also the amounts for health insurance were increased by 2.2 percent. Mr. McCarthy also recommended that the county assume the employees’ contribution to life insurance
