Front Royal returns to the Tour DuPont itinerary after hosting a Tour stage in 1989. Race stages have previously rolled through parts of Rappahannock County as well.
Last year, the racers zipped through Rappahannock as part of Stage 6 from Sharpsburg, Md., to Massanutten.
The decision to use Front Royal as a starting spot — assuring lots of major media attention — was made after the town waged a spirited battle with a number of other towns in the region, including Frederick, Md., and Martinsburg, W.Va.
Brunner said Front Royal was selected in part because of television considerations. “It’s a scenic town, it’s historic and it’s very pretty, a beautiful setting that can only help our event,” he said.
The total purse for the Tour DuPont is $200,000, with the winner receiving $40,000 and a Saturn automobile. Greg LeMond won the 1992 championship but won’t defend his title this year.
