THE PLAINS — The 68th running of the Virginia Gold Cup, set for May 1 at Great Meadow, north of Warrenton in Fauquier County, is nearing a sellout, race officials announced this week.
The featured race of the day, the Virginia Gold Cup, is the world’s richest timber race, run for a $40,000 purse over a demanding, 23fence course. The day’s card includes seven races on the flat, over brush and fences. Post time for the first race is 1:30 p.m.
The race has attracted record crowds for the past four years, and once again this year tickets are available in advance only. No tickets will be sold at the gate on race day.
Gates open at 10 a.m., and this year traffic on Route 245, between the Interstate 66 interchange and Great Meadow, will be one-way southbound from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
