program isn’t just for adults. Infants who weigh less than 1200 grams, approximately 2 pounds 10 ounces at birth are considerd disabled and may qualify. Even an infant who weighs more than 1200 grams at birth, and has serious medical problems, may also meet the SSI disability requirement.

Generally, while the infant is in the hospital, notes Hundley, the parents’ income is not counted and will not affect the baby’s eligibility. However, if the baby is receiving SSI and is discharge to go home with his or her parents, the parents’ income will be reviewed and may affect the baby’s continuing eligibility for benefits.

For more information about low birth weight babies and SSI, you can visit your Social Security office or call the tolbfr^e number, 1-800-7721213 business days between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. )
