clists travel 111 miles from Pen Mar, Md., to Hershey, Pa.
The cyclists will make the 150mile transfer to Front Royal via automobile on the morning of May 10 with a scheduled starting time of noon. Stage 5 of the race is slated to begin at Main and Chester Streets in Front Royal and will end 100 miles later at Massanutten Resort.
“We’d love to see 20,000 people in Front Royal at the starting line,” said Steve Brunner of race organizer Madlist Sports Inc. of Richmond. “It won’t be just people who are big fans of cycling. . . it’s got the potential to attract anybody and everybody, just like a parade or a festival.”
The crowd at Front Royal will be part of an estimated three million on-site visitors expected for the 1993 Tour.
After leaving Front Royal, the cyclists will face three major climbs, the first at Thornton Gap. A few minutes later, the race will wheel through SperryVille on the way to Madison County.
Cycling experts feel the race stages with major climbs, such as Stage 5, could be decisive for the eventual top finishers in the event. The total course length is approximately 1,085 miles.
Sperryville and Thornton Gap are listed along with the starting line as three of the best viewing spots for watching the action of Stage 5.
It’s estimated the day’s racing will take about four hours, ending in front of Massanutten Lodge.
