C&P Telephone Co. is polling its Culpeper customers to see if they are willing to pay an additional $1.30 per month to be able to call Warrenton without long distance charges. The enlarged local service area is walled Extended Local Service (ELS).
The poll is in response to a petition to the State Corporation Commission organized by Donna Lacey of Jeffersonton and Tom Moore of Warrenton. They collected 854 signatures on petitions located mostly in stores. Most of the signers have 9-3-7 Culpeper exchange numbers.
If Culpeper telephone customers approve the 1 change, Warrenton customers will then be polled. In Culpeper approximately 20 percent of the customers have received the poll. At least 50 percent must return their ballots and a majority of those must approve the change before Warrenton customers will be polled.
Mrs. Lacey said she believes that customers on the 9-3-7 exchange will overwhelmingly approve the increased monthly charge instead of long distance charges. She believes that probably a majority of 8-2-5 cutomers also favor the change, but the success of the ■ poll is by no means assured.
“Eisewhere in Virginia responses to a similar ballot were running 2 to 1 in favor of ELS, but the motion failed because fewer that 50 percent of the ballots were returned,” she said. “Every ballot is important. We urge everyone who receives one to respond. ”
