any weed seeds that germinate. Or, better yet, use a landscape fabric to control weeds in permanent ornamental plantings.
Also called geotextiles, today’s multi-purpose landscape fabrics deter weed growth around trees, plants and shrubs in the garden bed. Thousands of tiny funnels, or - “micropores,” give them their ability to permit the free flow of air and water while simultaneously blocking sunlight and weeds. Landscape fabrics are also extremely economical.
In some cases, hand weeding works best, especially for removing weeds growing close to plants. To avoid back injury, pull weeds from a sitting or kneeling position. Never till comfrey, dandelions or Jerusalem artichokes, wich can reproduce easily from tiny bits of the original root. Instead, dig these notorious garden thugs out by hand.
Hoes are wonderful weeding tools. They come in diffeent shapes and sizes related to specific tasks.
If you’re still losing the battle against weeds, there is one more solution. Add gravel pathways, groundcovers, stepping stones and other hard surfaces to the landscape so that weeds will have fewer places to poke up.
