On Sunday, Brandon W. Graham, 18, of Washington, D.C. fell approximately 50 feet from an overlook point to the rocks below, apparently breaking his leg. He was headed down the mountain from the Byrd’s Nest shelter.
Park rangers reached Mr. Graham at about 2:30 that afternoon. Using a stretcher, they carried him out for almost a mile along a robky, narrow footpath to a Madison County Rescue Squad ambulance waiting in Berry Hollow.
It was nearly 6:30 p.m. by the time the rangers turned Mr. Graham over to the rescue squad.
