Mr. McCarthy noted that this will not cost anything in the current year, since “VRS has waived the contribution requirement due to a revaluation of its assets.”
Sheriff John Henry Woodward requested an additional deputy to be paid for by county funds, but that position was not included in the budget for the sheriff s office.
Mr. McCarthy recommended that the building inspector’s position be made full time. Also Mr. McCarthy’s secretary’s position would be upgraded to administrative assistant with responsibility for the county payroll.
The budget for education at $5.4 million accounts for nearly 63 percent of the budget. It is up $621,500 or nearly 13 percent. Part of that difference is due to the RJR/Nabisco grant, but most of it results in a need for more local taxes.
The budget for public safety at $975,400 and 11.3 percent of the budget is the next largest portion of the budget. This includes expenses for the sheriffs office and jail, fire and rescue, the Enhanced 9-1-1 emergency dispatch system, building inspection and animal control. This category is actually down about $47,500 from the current year, because most of the equipment purchases for the 9-1-1 system are taking place this year.
