Starting April 27, a new variation of high occuparity vehicle (HOV) lanes will start on Interstate 66 from U.S. 50 east to the Washington Beltway. "'For this stretch of HOV roadway, only two are required to make Ac&rpool.
This comes as no surprise to commuters who have endured the added lane construction and have been reading the new signs for weeks. Bilt many are still confused about hflw the new lane will function. „.“The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has maintained that motorists will not lose a r&He tb HOV, but will use the shoulder as a lane during rush hours. During non-HOV hours, the extra lane will revert to a shoulder.
There are lane-use signals over the right shoulder that display an “X” or an arrow to designate use, but it is the inside left lane that is designated for HOV-2, said VDOT spokesperson Mary Ann Reynolds.
Without a shoulder, stalled vehicles could create more of a problem than before.
